Why is butterfly dagger banned

If you want to learn how Pot of Greed got banned may I suggest this article? Skip to content Posted in Yugioh. February 21, Tags: Yugioh. On paper, Butterfly Dagger — Elma is a pretty mediocre Equip Spell, with it only increasing the equipped monster's attack by Its only saving grace is that it returns to the player's hand when it's destroyed. However, this card is pushed into the overpowered category when combined with two monster cards that allow players to draw an infinite amount of cards.

This quickly resulted in it being banned. For the most part, cards that are placed on the Forbidden and Limited List are there due to their overpowered effects, their interactions with other cards causing infinite loops, or how quickly they can turn the tide of a duel in the player's favor when played.

Self-Destruct Button is the only card to be banned that falls into none of these categories, and it is only on the ban list because of its ability to force a tied game when played. Although it didn't see much play before being banned, it was used in stall decks like Final Countdown or Exodia to ensure that, even if they couldn't win, their opponent wouldn't win either. Being in the same list that held the likes of Pot of Greed, Raigeki, Harpie's Feather Duster, and Delinquent Duo would make players assume that Mass Driver was incredibly powerful, but its true power only comes into play when used alongside the Frog archetype.

Although Cannon Soldier has a very similar effect and was banned for largely the same reason, Mass Driver has the advantage of being a Spell Card that doesn't take up a Normal Summon, meaning Frog decks were able to take full advantage of its burn effect the turn it was played. It also helped that Frog decks were able to summon potentially limitless amounts of monsters to pay the cost for dealing damage.

I could have chosen a bunch of cards to drive home this point, but Butterfly Dagger - Elma was the original big bad when it came to looping combos. Sure, there are other ways to continuously abuse cards, but nothing like Butterfly Dagger - Elma when it comes to ease of use. If you're thinking about loop plays your mind might go to Inzektors in the current era, but Gearfried the Iron Knight was where it all began.

If you needed to activate infinite spells, then Gearfried the Iron Knight and Butterfly Dagger - Elma were your go-to cards. Royal Magical Library probably the most popular option for infinite draws, but the world is your oyster. There's been a pretty big cracking down on loop plays over the years, and even though Gearfried the Iron Knight might not be the best anymore, it would still be an option and easily abuseable with Butterfly Dagger - Elma.

The sheer existence of Butterfly Dagger - Elma means a loop could exist, and I hope for the love of all that's good in the world, they don't errata it. I really don't want to see old cards watered down and brought back, just to see no play anyways. Just let it rest in peace. Look, I know I just got done talking about loops, but Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier wasn't hit solely for loop combos. Technically, yeah, there are weird combinations of cards that can create looping plays, but Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier drew the ire of the dueling world largely because it meant you could reuse cards multiple times.

Discard The Fabled Cerburrel to target one on your field, bounce it to your hand, tthe discarded one Special Summons itself, and you'll discard the other to bounce your on-field copy as many times as you want. Or in my case that day, 27 times.

Imagine how wild Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite would be if you could use it again and again? Why yes, I would like to bounce my Dragon Ravine six times, please.

Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier saw play in literally every deck that could make Synchros, creating pitfalls for Continuous, Field, and Equip card design the moment it came into existence.

And now Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier has an errata, making its effect once-per- turn and only allowing you to bounce your opponent's cards.

In short, Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier almost useless now. And if you can't hear the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh noise as you read this, yes, I am shaking my fist in the air. That's a fair question, and one I've heard dozens of times. The answer's simple, but twofold: if you need to clear your opponent's backrow for an OTK, returning their defensive cards to their hand is more reliable than destroying them, because so many protective effects work to fend off destruction, but do nothing to stop ounce effects.

That means Giant Trunade has a higher chance of resolving successfully so you can get the job done. The second answer's basically the same as Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier : returning all of your own spells and traps to your hand means you can use them again and trigger any effects that happen when they're activated.

I don't know why my mind always goes to Dragon Ravine , but it's one of the more familiar examples to the average duelist. Heck yeah, I'd like to use the same Dragon Ravine multiple times in a turn! I'm happy for you, Kelly! If you want to check out his Dragunity deck, you'll notice there's no Giant Trunade , but Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite is there to play.

I don't know how else to start this without feeling old, but just… back in the day, boss monsters summoned from the hand were… good? It's no secret that these days, the Extra Deck is where it's at. I guess, um… Inspector Boarder … and… um Herald of Ultimateness? And… I really can't name many monsters from your Main Deck that you'd actually finish your turn with. Game terms. There are a number of variations of the OTK, but generally all revolves around these two cards: Butterfly Dagger - Elma Gearfried the Iron Knight The other half of the cards depend on the victory condition a player is going for.
