Couldn't taste anything but the ketchup. Might as well skip the other ingredients and pour ketchup on your salad if that's what you're into. Reviews: Most Helpful. Kristin Goodrich. AJ Flores. My whole family loves this. I am making it again today:o I use a jelly-like sauce that comes in a tube in the salad section of a higher-end grocery store. I bet had I used something else it would taste quite different. Bernice Dray. It was fabulous on a Reuben Sandwich! This recipe is a keeper! Made it with dried chopped onion and Trader Joe's seafood cocktail sauce in place of ketchup and horse radish.
I made this exactly as written except that I used the hint to grate the onion which made a lovely uniform mush--I thought it was perfect. Used the dressing to make the most outstanding Ruben sandwiches with the left over corned beef that I have ever made.
Dripping Springs, TX. I found out this recipe from Sean Spicer, after he said that "if President Trump uses salad dressing, then it's a Russian connection Fantastic on a big sloppy burger with sliced tomatoes, good cheddar and a slice of onion.
Going to try it on a charred romaine salad next! Love this recipe. Reminds me of the Russian Dressing I loved as a kid 40 years ago. It's a shame it's gone out of fashion. If you're going to make it, procuring the Heinz chili sauce is a must. I make it as written, using shriracha sauce for the hot sauce component. I generally use shallot instead of onion, but both are good. Great recipe. Was wonderful on pastrami with cole slaw on rye. Today it seems harder to find Russian dressing as Thousand Island dressing becomes more mainstream.
My personal opinion is because Thousand Island is sweeter, which is where a lot of taste buds have unfortunately leaned towards.
Russian dressing recipes typically call for mayonnaise, chili sauce or ketchup , relish pickles or pickle juice , horseradish and seasonings which makes it considerably spicier and less sweet than Thousand Island dressing.
Thousand Island uses hard boiled eggs, lemon or orange juice, cream and sweet pickle relish or olives. What I love about Russian dressing the most is the tang. This dressing is the best on top of salads, to dip French fries in, top off your ham and cheese sandwich — or of course on top of a Reuben!
