Dash regular spices, and chili pepper. I never measure; just use what I think is reasonable. I used 1 cup of dried peas soaked in water for the 4 hours, then just left out for an hour or so on a towel to dry before cooking.
I split the peas into two batches so that the peas would not be layered too much. This makes a fantastic snack or can be sprinkled in salads, on sandwiches, or in soups. It will work if you follow a sensible cooking process.
Thanks so much for sharing a great recipe. I found 7 — 10 minutes cooking time too long for green split peas. They got burnt suddenly. Watch them very carefully.
Tough and chewy. I made these using onion and garlic powder and all season salt. Cooked for ten minutes. They turned out awesome thank you. I cooked up a triple recipe, so my cook time was closer to 20 minutes in the cast iron skillet. I added chili, garlic and onion powders, pink salt, and paprika. Then I spread them out on a stoneware baking pan to cool overnight.
They look beautiful! Maybe they would turn out crispy if they were deep fried. I then reduced to med-low in attempt to drive off the moisture without burning any more. I have no idea how you could possibly get them crunchy in 10 minutes.
If you make these, do NOT multiply the recipe… I did x3 and was far from expected. Or at least divide into batches. More than one layer in the pan makes it cook unevenly, even with constant stirring. Pretty sure all peas must be on the pan directly, none on top of others, which should be specified in the recipe. I had a few dozen burnt and thousands still well hydrated after 30 min constant stirring with heat much reduced at about 12 min.
Recipe calls for 10 min. I like those ones. But it will take a while. After frying it before?? My intelligence tells me after?? I messed them up but the flavor is good! I did soak them for 4 hours but maybe I should have done that overnight?
Any ideas on what I did wrong? Mine came out wicked hard, too! Well, not all of them, but a lot. Flavor is good though.
These were really good and easier to make than I expected. I baked them in the oven as I am looking for heart healthy snaks. I put salt and black pepper one batch, Paprika and chilli on the second and left the third plain. These are Amazing. Crunchy Split Peas: I boiled my peas for about 2 hours, and then baked them for about 10 minutes. The peas were really, great! Thank you! Hello Susan. I read your comment on the crunchy split pea snack.
I want to try this recipe. Did you boil or just soak your split peas please? Thank you. I doubled the recipe and added sea salt, curry powder, and onion powder.
Flavor was good. I really really wanted this to come out good but it did not. I followed the recipe exactly. Within 3 minutes of frying the split peas on medium heat, the peas burnt to a black crisp. I will try baking them instead. Thank you for posting your experience. What type of pan did you use, and did you stir continuously? Exactly how long did you cook the split peas? I have been given several bags of split peas. After many pots of soup, I am looking for other ways to use them.
I will try this recipe today. I tried this and it came out pretty good. They did not get crispy but the taste was very good. It reminds me of roasted peanuts- they have a nice nutty taste to them.

I soaked a bag of peas for 4 hours, dropped them in boiling water for 10 mins, let them dry overnight and fried them the next day. For seasoning, I used garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt and chili powder. I just eyeballed the amount and fried them in olive oil for a total of 12 mins. I made these. I added some cayyene pepper instead of chili powder for an extra kick, and also added a bit of Greens Seasoning.
I added them back to heat with a tad bit of butter and cooked them an additional 15 mins ish.. They came out wonderful! Bits of very crunchy flavorful parts along with some semi crunchy very slightly soft bits. Both were very good. New favorite.. These turned out awful for us! The split peas we have in this French colony are green, and they never turned brown. Is this a special variety of pea? These are tasty! On my second attempt, I added cayenne, garlic salt, and at the last minute of cook time added a squeeze of lime.
Endless possibilities as stated. I cooked them longer than 10 minutes in the skillet and had to finish them in the oven at for about 12 minutes to get the crunch I was looking for. This worked so well for me and is so addicting! I tried it with a non stick skillet and a stainless steel one and found that the non stick skillet worked better at controlling the heat and required less stirring.
Couple months ago my mnl gave me a bag of these yellow split peas and I was like what am I suppose to do with these things? I said oh,, and you think I have? No not in my life heard of them. After months of tossing them around from one spot to another in my pantry I decided to Google them and found your site with a snack recipe.. These are tried and true to flavor and crunch. The crunch comes from the soaked uncooked pee in the oil or butter and seasonings. They worked perfectly although 10 minutes made them too hard for my teeth so knocked down time to 7 on second batch.
Thank you so much for this amazing new go to snack. As they are only soaked and toasted, most of the starches in the peas remain unaltered.
