A Jake brake attaches to the valve train while an exhaust brake attaches to the exhaust system 3. A Jake brake is able to produce a lot more braking power than an exhaust brake 4. A Jake brake produce significantly more noise than an exhaust brake. Cite APA 7 , l. Difference Between Similar Terms and Objects. MLA 8 , lanceben. Thanks for explaining the differences between a Jake Brake and an exhaust brake. We are looking for an RV and this articles helped us educate ourselves on which braking system is better aka not banned.
Great article man, clear illustration on the two braking systems. Kindly review on engine specifics that can be fitted with exhaust brakes if it was manufactured without.
Am very grateful on how you have explained the difference between the jak brake and exhaust brake system. Whereas an exhaust brake traps compressed air inside the cylinders inhibiting upward piston movement , a Jake creates a vacuum to inhibit downward piston movement. A Jake brake is essentially a solenoid that causes the exhaust valve to open early while the piston is still traveling upward ; all of the air gets pushed out, leaving a powerful vacuum behind.
A Jake brake is integral to the engine; it comprises a big part of the valvetrain, so you can't just add one on like you would an exhaust brake. A Jake brake can produce negative power to upwards of 90 percent the engine's max power. Although Jake brakes are powerful, they're not without their problems. The first is that the design is noisy; if you've ever heard a machinegun-like clatter echoing through a mountain valley then you've experienced the Jake brake's signature howl.
Exhaust brakes don't produce the loud blatting sound for which engine brakes are known. They actually make no sound at all. Exhaust brakes are designed to be used all the time, not just when you need them [source: Purcell ]. When used as recommended, they save money by reducing brake service costs and offer added security if you are traveling or pulling a rig in hill country.
Not all diesel engines can be fitted with an exhaust brake. The engine must be large enough to room proper mounting and have stronger components installed. Check with your manufacturer or a knowledgeable mechanic if your vehicle didn't come with exhaust brakes and you want to have them installed.

Instead of creating a space for the exploding gases in the cylinder jake brakes empty the space to slow down the downward piston movement. While the piston is still upward the Jake brake makes the exhaust valve to open early that vacuums the gases. This removes any application of the gases to the engine and hence helps to slow down the vehicle. Such as the exhaust brake can only perform somewhat 60 to 80 per cent of what a Jake brake can do.
