Since IVIg is a blood product, is it safe? In formulations of IVIG with a high sugar content, the sugar level in the blood may be affected transiently following an infusion.
This can often be avoided by slowing down the infusions and hydrating the body well. Additionally, because the medication has a large volume, it may worsen heart failure and may cause the blood pressure to be elevated temporarily. IVIG also increases the risk for blood clots slightly when given in high doses. If you develop a severe reaction difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing, rash, fevers or if have severe and persistent headaches with neck stiffness, nausea and vomiting, tell your rheumatology provider.
While some reactions may occur while IVIG is being administered, others occur within a few hours to days after the infusion. While vaccines are not contraindicated while on therapy with IVIG, your body may not be able to fully respond to the vaccines.
Talk to your rheumatology provider about the best time to receive immunizations. Before you start IVIg, your doctor will check the levels of immunoglobulins in your blood. You might not be given IVIg if you've had a previous reaction to immunoglobulin, and you may not be able to have some types of IVIg if you have an intolerance to fruit sugar. IVIg is given through a drip into a vein, this is known as intravenous infusion. The infusion will take several hours as the drug has to be given slowly.
How often you have IVIg infusions will depend on the condition you have and how you respond to the treatment. The dose will be calculated based on your weight. People having IVIg occasionally have a reaction during or after the infusion. The symptoms of this include:.

All blood donors for IVIg are carefully tested for certain diseases that could be passed on to you, such as hepatitis B, and they are only able to donate if their blood is safe. However, it's impossible to completely rule out the risk of passing on some infections. Intravenous immunoglobulin commonly referred to as IVIg is used to treat many immune deficiency disorders and inflammatory conditions. An IVIg infusion is a common and safe procedure. IVIg is prepared from blood donated by thousands of healthy people to make a concentrated collection of antibodies immunoglobulins.
All IVIg products are tested and screened to protect patients from diseases. They also undergo at least two processes that destroy viruses. The risk of infection is very low. You will be asked to sign a consent form to allow your child to have an IVIg infusion.
You can ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have with the doctor before you agree to your child being given IVIg. You will also be asked for your consent oral or written to the collection, retention and use of your child's personal information and clinical data.

Before the IVIg infusion begins, two nurses will check that the details on your child's wristband full name and date of birth exactly match those on each IVIg bottle. You may be asked to participate in this check. This will happen each time, even if your child needs many IVIg infusions.
